Whatcom Sustainable Recreation
Mission:
Whatcom Sustainable Recreation is dedicated to creating a community focused on playing in, benefiting from, and conserving our natural home for generations to come.
Outcomes:
Whatcom Sustainable Recreation (WSR) works together with other community partners to create a community in which:
- Events and jurisdictions (cities, county, parks, port, police, USFS, DNR, BLM, etc.) work cooperatively to coordinate the use of parks, roads, facilities and other assets to facilitate opportunities for successful recreational and race events.
- Local development, tourism, and retail businesses support the mission of WSR.
- Race and recreational events move toward zero waste and carbon neutrality.
- Political support for parks, recreational amenities, and indoor and outdoor facilities and programs is solid across the political spectrum.
- All aspects of the recreational infrastructure, natural and manmade, indoor and outdoor, are consistently maintained, developed, and improved on an on-going basis.
- Volunteerism for parks and the environment, WHIMPS and other local recreation clubs, and race and recreation events, is the norm across all user groups.
- Whatcom County communities, businesses, and individuals take action to reduce the carbon cost of their personal recreational activities.
- Educational programs and schools throughout Whatcom County share the values of sustainable recreation with children and adults as integral to Whatcom County’s culture.
- The growth of recreation and events is managed with conservation of the land and resources in mind, and with consideration for the needs and convenience of local residents.
- The wider community accepts occasional disruptions and inconvenience as part of the community’s recreational culture.
